Devil's Hopyard State Park

Flag as Inappropriate

This large state park in the Millington section of East Haddam is marked by the 60-foot Chapman Falls, where water cascades over a series of steps known as a Scotland Schist, composed of gray to silvery, rusty rocks. Local legend details the pothole stone formations in the falls are the work of the devil, who upon becoming angered over wetting his tail at the falls, then stomped so hard his hooves wore holes in the stones, hence the name. No admission is charged, and there is a small daily camping fee at any of its 21 campsites. Wonderful birding opportunities present themselves and fishing for brook trout is plentiful.
