Firearm Bans Come to Killingworth

The Killingworth Republican Town Committee requests State Senator Ed Meyer to explain to the residents of Killingworth the purpose of bill No. 122, an act concerning the restriction on gun use

In January's state legislative session, State Senator Ed Meyer of the 12th district (representing the towns of Killingworth, Branford, Durham, Guilford, Madison & North Branford) introduced bill No. 122 to the Connecticut General Assembly, where it was referred to the Judiciary Committee for review. It reads:

AN ACT CONCERNING RESTRICTIONS ON GUN USE.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:

That the general statutes be amended to establish a class C felony offense, except for certain military and law enforcement personnel and certain gun clubs, for (1) any person or organization to purchase, sell, donate, transport, possess or use any gun except one made to fire a single round, (2) any person to fire a gun containing more than a single round, (3) any person or organization to receive from another state, territory or country a gun made to fire multiple rounds, or (4) any person or organization to purchase, sell, donate or possess a magazine or clip capable of holding more than one round.

The full text of bill No. 122 as submitted may be reviewed on the state of Connecticut General Assembly website here (http://www.cga.ct.gov/2013/TOB/S/2013SB-00122-R00-SB.htm).  In essence, Senator Meyer’s bill as written will prohibit the possession of any firearm that has the ability to fire or contain more than a single round regardless of its purpose or design, with a penalty of 1 to 10 years in prison, and a fine of $10,000.

The Killingworth Republican Town Committee represents a law abiding community with a rich small town heritage and farming ancestry, where so many residents possess either a five round hunting rifle, a two shot double barreled shotgun, or even an antiquated six shot revolver they inherited from their grandfathers and great grandfathers, all of which would be prohibited by the language of Senator Meyer’s proposed bill. We therefore ask Senator Meyer to explain to the residents of Killingworth the purpose of this proposed bill, and how this legislation genuinely represents the will of his Killingworth constituency.

We invite all those interested in responding to this proposed bill to contact Senator Meyer to address their opinions. He may be reached through the contact section on his Connecticut General Assembly web page here: (http://senatedems.ct.gov/Meyer.php).
