Special Town Meeting in Killingworth Tonight

Killingworth voters will choose a new member of the RSD17 Board of Education to fill a current vacancy.

Killingworth voters and electors will act on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7pm to elect a new member to the Regional #17 Board of Education (BOE). The new member's term will expire Nov. 4, 2013.

The Democratic Town Committee is supporting Kelly Leach for the open position.

The Republican Town Committee is supporting Jeannie Young.

A Special Town Meeting is being called for this occasion. Only those registered to vote in Killingworth may vote in the special election.

The BOE vacancy came about due to the resignation of Killingworth member Peggy Bushey, also BOE treasurer, who resigned effective Feb. 1.

The meeting and vote will take place in the "All Purpose Room" of the Killingworth Elementary School on February 28, 2013 at 7pm.

Members of the Regional #17 BOE include:

Steven Banaletti (Higganum); Peggie Bushey - Board Treasurer (Killingworth) resigned Feb. 1; Susan Dean - Board Secretary (Killingworth); Joel D'Angelo (Killingworth); Chet Harris (Haddam Neck); Jamie Lehane (Killingworth); Karen Perry - Board Chair (Killingworth); Amy Jacques-Purdy (Haddam); Sue Twachtman (Higganum); Becky Valenti (Higganum); Jonathan Wintsch - Board Vice Chair (Haddam).

I believe Haddam voters have just as much interest in this BOE seat and therefore should have a vote!

Can someone explain to me exactly what the Board of Education does with the school?

Board of education members are in charge of the school policies and they set rules and regulations for the school. Whoever gets elected is going to be put in charge of what the teachers are going to be teaching children so they had better be careful about what they are doing. Plus whatever they do is going to impact how the school spends money so they can drive up the school budget if they do not know what they are doing. I looked at the repub candidate and she has children and works with children and she worked in finance. Okay fine. I then looked that the democrat candidate hoping and praying the democrats were not going to tell us to vote for them just for the sake of voting democrat like the last election and what do i see. Someone with zero experience with children who is asking us to vote for her because she is such a nice person. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Just as a note to all readers that Jeanie Young was actually recommended to fill this vacancy by the chair of the BOE Karen Perry. This seat is extremely important as 80% of the taxes in Killingworth go to fund the school budget. Jeanie will work to ensure we get every bit of value out of every tax dollar for the schools.
