Haddam Volunteer Ambulance Service-Protect Your Extremeties

The winter season can take its toll on skin, especially the hands and feet.  At this time of year, the combination of decreased humidity and low temperatures can result in hands and feet that are dry, cracked and achy and open to infection.

It is important to protect all extremities to keep them healthy throughout the winter season.  While we are washing our hands more frequently, using hand sanitizer and taking hot showers, our skin can become extremely dry and cracked.  Keeping hands and feet moisturized will help prevent against cracked skin.

It is also important to keep your extremities protected from the elements.   So much as going outside for a quick drive can subject you to wicked winds, freezing rain and snow.  It is important to wear boots that keep your feet warm and also resist rain and snow.  Wearing gloves and mittens also allow extra layers of protection for your hands.

Skin can also suffer from frostbite when exposed to very cold temperatures.  Everyone should be aware of the warning signs of frostbite and protect themselves.  Symptoms of frostbite include numbness in the extremities, and the sensation of pins and needles.  The extremities are particularly vulnerable to frostbite.   Warm water should be used to gradually warm the skin if frostbite is suspected.  If numbness or pain is suspected, medical care should be sought immediately.
