Voters Turn Out in Haddam For Special Election

By 4 p.m., Ballot Casting Termed 'Pretty Light' for 36th Assembly District race between Democrat Phil Miller and Republican Janet Peckinpaugh

Temperatures in the mid-20s just before noon Tuesday didn't hamper voters heading out to cast their ballots in the special election for the state Representative for the 36th District seat, which covers Haddam, Chester, Deep River and Essex.

Republican Janet Peckinpaugh and Democrat and First Selectman of Essex Phil Miller are vying for election to the Connecticut State Assembly, a spot vacated by Democrat James Spallone.

At the Haddam Volunteer Fire Co., just before noon, there was a light stream of voters filing into the station. Inside, former First Selectwoman Marge DeBold and former state Sen. Edward Munster volunteered as poll workers, while Diana Link was among the half-dozen people counting absentee ballots.

By 4 p.m., 603 voters had turned out at the Fire Co. Democratic Registrar Saralyn Twomey said shortly after 4 p.m. figures had come in from all three districts in Haddam. In all, 833 citizens had cast votes, plus 100 absentee ballots had been counted. Twomey said those numbers were "pretty light for an election."

Polls are open in Haddam until 8 p.m.
