Haddam and Killingworth Voting Not Affected by Sandy

Voting will occur as usual despite the widespread power outages in the towns of Haddam and Killingworth.

Neither storms nor newborns care about major events on the calendar and with Election Day upon us, dozens of polling places are still without power. Voters in Haddam and Killingworth, however (and fortunately), will not be affected by Hurricane Sandy when casting their ballots.

Dawn Mooney, Assistant Town Clerk at the Town of Killingworth, reports that “The school has power. Voting will occur as it always does – 6 a.m. until 8 p.m."

"The impact was that the voter registration deadline was extended by the Governor to Thursday [Nov. 1], so where it would have been Tuesday, he extended it two days,” Mooney added.

Sandy or no Sandy, she points out, "The registrars at the polls are always willing to go out to the car for people who aren’t mobile. They’ll go out to the car with the ballot, the person can fill it out and then they’ll take it back in for them. That’s not something new due to the storm."

Mooney summed up: "We’re good. There’s so many communities out there that are not but we are."

Haddam Registrars of Voters Raymond Skarsten and Saralyn Twomey reported: "We were very lucky that we were not impacted by Sandy. Our Internet was down for two days (no big deal)."

"The voter registration deadline was extended two days to accomodate the voters to which we had an amazing turn out. It's great to see the interest in town for this election," they added.
