Report: Melissa Schlag To Run for Haddam First Selectman

Melissa Schlag, whose opposition to the Haddam land swap deal garnered her statewide focus, is now the Democratic candidate for First Selectman in Haddam The Hartford Courant announced Thursday. Schlag, a former Green Party candidate and environmental activist, will head the Dems party November ticket against two-term incumbent, Republican Paul J. DeStefano, according to the Courant.

Schlag's will be running with Incumbent Democratic Selectman Sean Donlan.

According to the Courant, Schlag ran unsuccesfully for Eileen Daily's vacant 33rd District Senate seat back in 2012. She runs her own painting and home-repair business.

Schlag said on her Facebook page:

Looking forward to serving the people of Haddam, Higganum and Haddam Neck. I will bring a fresh approach and open government to our historic town. My door (and phone) are always open for ideas and comments.

The Courant said that Schlag  "will be meeting with party members this week to plan strategy, but that exploring ways to reduce Haddam's tax rate of nearly 30 mills will be a top priority." 

"Working to preserve the town's scenic values while promoting thoughtful development and efficient government are also important," she said to the Courant.
