Malloy Partially Activates Emergency Operations Center Saturday

The Governor's Office is warning of high winds throughout the state on Saturday.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has ordered a partial activation of the State Armory in Hartford beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday to "monitor and manage" wind related issues such as power outages or fallen branches that could arise as a result of forecasted heavy winds.

“After talking with my emergency management officials and assessing the situation, we will be partially activating the EOC at 8 a.m. tomorrow,” Malloy said in a statement.  “This will allow us to quickly respond to and coordinate any problems that may arise as a result of Saturday’s potentially high winds.”

According to Malloy's office, a High Wind Warning has been issued for Windham, New London and Southern Middlesex Counties, which takes effect overnight, with the strongest winds expected after daybreak tomorrow. A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected with sustained wind speeds of at least 40 MPH and gusts possibly in excess of 58 MPH. A Wind Advisory has been issued for the rest of the state.

Malloy's weekend schedule has him in Washington, D.C., to attend the 2012 National Governors Association Winter Meeting. His office said the Emergency Operations Center will be staffed by the Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Division of the State Police, Department of Public Health, Department of Transportation, Military Department, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, State Fire Coordination, representatives from the state’s utilities and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman.

In recent weeks, power crews have been seen working throughout the towns of Haddam and East Haddam cutting back trees that surround power lines in preparation for weather like this.
