With 17.8% voter participation, Killingworth's budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year passed Saturday at the town's referendum. 751 voters cast their ballots, 9 voters more than last year.

732 of those ballots were submitted in person at Killingworth Elementary School and 17 were absentee ballots.

"From 8 AM this morning until around 2 PM, our First Selectman and members of the Board of Finance were at the town dump reminding people to vote," said Moderator Rick Albrecht.

The breakdown of votes went as follows:

Question #1- Concerning the $4,281,503 Operating Budget for the fiscal year of 2013-2014

  • Yes: 481 (467 in person and 14 absentee)
  • No: 262 (257 in person and 5 absentee)
Question #2- Concerning the $573,419 Capital Budget for the fiscal year of 2013-2014

  • No: 263 (258 in person and 5 absentee)
Now that the budget has passed, this Monday, at a Board of Finance meeting, the town's new mill rate will be set.

"The mill rate will not be any higher than it is now," said John McMahon of the Board of Finance. "The Board will get together and debate the rate. I'm happy the people of Killingworth came out today and let themselves be heard by voting the budget through."
