HK High Math Teacher Recognized as Finalist

Angela Miller is one of four teachers in the state who were a finalist for the presidential award.

 

Angela Miller, a math teacher at Haddam-Killingworth High School, will be recognized by the state’s Board of Education as a finalist for the 2012 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Miller was one of four finalists in the state for the award.

The proposed resolution the board will vote on states, in part: “Angela Miller … has demonstrated superior teaching skills … her exemplary mathematics teaching serves as an inspiration to her students and represents Connecticut’s high expectations for mathematic teachers … she has brought great honor to her community, her state and her profession.”

The goal of the presidential award for excellence in mathematics and science is to “exemplify the knowledge, skills and attributes of high-quality mathematics and science teaching,” the board states in its summary of the award.

Established in 1983 by the White House, the award is administered by the National Science Foundation. States can select up to three finalists each in math and science. A national selection panel reviews the finalists’ applications and may recommend to the president one science finalist and one math finalist each. The White House then announces the awardees.
