Haddam Will See $2.5K in Recycling Rebates

Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority Incentive Pays $5 Per Ton of Recycled Items to Qualifying Municipalites

Haddam is among 64 municipalities across Connecticut getting rebates from the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority for its recycling efforts last year. More than $415,000 — $5 for every ton of recyclables delivered to the CRRA by June 20, 2010 — was approved Feb. 24 by its Board of Directors.

Haddam sent 492.02 tons of recyclables, triggering a payment of $2,460.10. According to the CRRA, money for the rebates comes from revenues it receives from the sale of recycled commodities. By not sending that waste to the Mid-Connecticut Project trash-to-energy plant, CRRA reports, the towns saved more than $5.7 million in disposal fees.

Single-stream recycling (in which all recyclables are placed in one bin and sorted by state-of-the-art machinery) began in the state in 2008. Last year, the CRRA began accepting #3 (vinyl and PVC, found in shampoo cooking oil bottles) and #7 (miscellaneous, found in sunglasses and DVDs) plastics.

East Haddam introduced single-stream recycling last year and has the items sorted at the Willimantic Waste Co. Haddam plans on incorporating single-stream recycling into its proposed new Transfer Station project, which must be complete by July 2012.

(Deep River recycled 1,451 tons and will receive $7,259.25; Chester, 325 tons, for a $1,626.85 rebate; Essex, 767 tons, $3,835 rebate).
