Citizens for Protection of Public Land Petition the Governor

The group opposing the swap of 17 acres near the Connecticut River in Haddam has submitted a petition to the governor with over 650 signatures.

With a potential vote on the controversial Haddam land swap plan now just hours away, the group Citizens for Protection of Public Land submitted a petition opposing the swap to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's office Monday afternoon.

The petition contained the signatures of 664 people from some 50 towns in the state. The land swap bill is currently pending in the legislature, which has until tomorrow night to act on it. The session officially ends at midnight on Wednesday.

The conservationist-minded Citizens for Protection of Public Land argue that the trade of the state-owned 17 acres in Tylerville would set a dangerous precedent for the future sale or donation of conservation lands to the state and could make all Connecticut's open space “vulnerable to developers.”

The swap is being sought by state Sen. Eileen Daily on behalf of a group of developers who want the 17 acres for development that they say would boost tourism. In return, the developers would give the state 87 acres of forest land they own in Higganum.
