Candidate Profile: Dan Chase

Higganum resident, UMass Professor, professional grant writer and parent seeks your vote for election to the Board of Education.

My name is Dan Chase, I live in Higganum and I am running for the Board of Education for Haddam. My wife and I moved to town 5 years ago and we have two children in public schools; one in Burr Elementary and one in H-K Middle School. I am a professor of Biochemistry at the University of Massachusetts where I teach both undergraduate and graduate students and head a research laboratory. In addition to being a teacher, I have served on the Admissions Committee for UMass, the Curriculum Committee and the Academic Affairs Committees. I am also a professional grant-writer and have secured funding for my research from the National Institutes of Health and from private foundations including the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and the National Parkinson’s Foundation.

With this experience, I am prepared to work tirelessly to make certain our kids are getting the best education possible from our schools while remaining fiscally responsible to the taxpayers of Haddam and Killingworth. This will require hard work, long hours, and difficult decision-making.

Please consider your candidates carefully before casting your vote on November 8. Remember, the people we elect will be on the Board for 4 years and will be responsible for spending nearly 40 million dollars collected from our property taxes every year. If you would like to learn more about all the candidates running for the school board you can view the recent online debate sponsored by the Haddam-Killingworth Education Association in which all candidates were given the opportunity to answer questions about education issues that concern our residents.

While I am a registered Democrat, the business of the school board is not politically driven. All of the candidates want the same result: the best education possible without spending additional money. You have to decide who will work hard to get this job done and then cast your vote.
