BOS Approves $3.5M Bond for Killingworth Town Hall Addition

The project is estimated to cost each household an additional $70 or about 0.3 mill/year. A town-wide referendum on the Killingworth town hall addition is scheduled for July 24, 2012.

The Killingworth Board of Selectmen voted at their June 25th meeting to authorize the appropriation of bonds in the amount of $3,500,000 for the proposed Killingworth Town Hall addition project. The project is estimated to cost the average household an additional $70 or about 0.3 mill/year based on “favorable interest rates, a strong bond rating and a competitive construction market.”

According to , the $3.5 million breaks down to $2.3 million in construction costs, which includes everything from the post-and-beam construction to the cost of new furniture, fixtures and carpets. The Town Office Building Committee, the report said, also included another $700,000 for site work for the possible installation of a new septic system and sprinkler system, as well as, an estimated $500,000 in professional services and fees.

The proposed 7,300 square foot addition to the existing town hall would be an energy-efficient, post-and-beam building. It would include a 75-person meeting room, space for the Resident State Trooper, an emergency operations center and a legal polling place. The building would be heated by solar panels and geothermal energy. The permanent Town Hall addition would replace the temporary modular units that were added in 2001, which would be taken down as part of the project.

The proposed design dates back to the New England tradition of plots that included a big house, a little house, a back house and a barn.
