Violation of a Protective Order, Stolen Handguns and Witness to a Crime

East Haddam Police activity reports through June 23.

The East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K, report the following incidents:

VIOLATION OF A PROTECTIVE ORDER - On June 17, at approximately 9:36 a.m., police pulled a driver over on the East Haddam-Colchester Turnpike for a routine motor vehicle violation. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that there was an active 'no-contact' protective order against the driver, listing his female passenger as the protected person. Paul Foss Deckelman, Jr., 29, of 28 Main Street, East Hampton, was placed under arrest and transported to Troop K. Deckelman was processed and charged with the above violation. He was released on a $1,000 non-surety bond and scheduled to appear in Middlesex Superior Court on 6/20/11.

LARCENY - On June 17, East Haddam police were called to investigate a larceny of a table and four chairs that had been removed from the outdoor dining area at the Corner Family Restaurant (at the intersection of Town Street and Route 151) in East Haddam.

WITNESS TO A CRIME - On June 21, East Haddam Police received a request from the Melbourne Police Department in Melbourne, Florida, to obtain a written statement from a Honey Hill Road resident who had been a witness to a burglary while visiting the Melbourne area. A residential burglary in which handguns and other personal items were stolen is being investigated. The statement was obtained and turned over to Melbourne Police.

MOTOR-VEHICLE vs. TREE - On June 21, at approximately 1:43 a.m., Kurt Steenhoff, 19, of Monroe Street, New Britain, was traveling southbound along Millington-Hopyard Road in East Haddam, in a 2010 Toyota Camry. Steenhoff lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree, and was transported to the Marlborough Emergency Clinic in Marlborough by East Haddam EMS with injuries.

MOTOR-VEHICLE vs. FENCE - On June 22, at approximately 9:03 p.m., Robert Mims, 22, of Schulman-Veselak Road, East Haddam, was traveling southbound along Route 151 in East Haddam, in a 1995 Subaru Legacy. Mims informed police that he had looked down to adjust his defroster, losing his focus on the road. He then lost control of the vehicle and traveled off the left-hand side of the roadway, striking a wooden fence. No injuries were reported, but the vehicle had to be towed from the scene. Mims was issued an infraction for failure to drive upon the right.

SIXTH-DEGREE LARCENY - On June 23, at approximately 4:10 p.m., Colchester Police were called to investigate a larceny that took place at NAPA Auto Parts on Linwood Cemetery Road in Colchester. Joshua Freitas, 23, of 44 Millington Road, East Haddam, was accused of stealing a diagnostic tool from the store, worth $148.99.  Freitas was released on a $2,000 non-surety bond and scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court on 7/7/11.

LARCENY FROM A MOTOR-VEHICLE - On June 23, a Honey Hill Road, East Haddam resident reported to police that between $50 - $100 in cash had been stolen from a vehicle. Police conducted a neighborhood canvas, and the incident is under investigation.
