Truck Driver Injured in Route 9 Crash

A weekend accident on the highway near the Route 81 overpass tied up traffic for hours in both directions.

A truck crash on Route 9, in which a 55-year-old Plainville man was seriously injured when he was ejected from his truck, snarled traffic in both directions of the highway for several hours Saturday as police, fire crews, medical emergency personnel and utility company workers responded.

The accident happened around 2:15 p.m., on Aug. 20th and caused the driver of a utility truck, a 1996 Chevy C-3500, to be ejected from the vehicle, according to Bob Norton, public  information liaison for the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company.

The driver, whose name was not available, was transported by Haddam Ambulance to Middlesex Memorial Hospital in Middletown, where he was then air-lifted to Hartford Hospital via Lifestar Helicopter for injuries sustained in the accident.

The truck was traveling northbound on Route 9, just south of the Route 81 overpass when, for unknown reasons, it left the roadway and traveled into the center median, rolling over several times, Norton said. The truck then crashed down the embankment in the area of Route 81, stopping against a utility pole on the hillside.

Haddam Fire Command called in CL&P, AT&T, and Comcast Cable to assist in untangling the wires that had become wrapped around the truck, and the Connecticut State Police Accident Investigation Unit were on scene to examine evidence to try to determine the cause of the accident.

New Image Automotive, from Killingworth Road in Higganum, assisted with three recovery vehicles to remove the truck from the accident scene. Equipment and other debris was scattered and widespread in and around the area as a result of the impact.

Haddam Fire Company members secured the scene and were dismissed shortly after 7 p.m., Norton said.

No further information was available from state police, as they continue their investigation into the accident.
