Police: Dog Bites Trooper During Investigation into Shed Burglary in Durham

State police troopers were called to Haddam Quarter Road early Tuesday to investigate a burglary.

A state police trooper was bitten by a dog while investigating a burglary in Durham Tuesday morning, according to police.

Troopers were called to Haddam Quarter Road around 8 a.m. after a homeowner reported that a shed had been broken into. While investigating the burglary, a trooper interviewing neighbors along Foot Hills Road was bitten by another neighbor's dog, police said.

The trooper was taken to a local hospital but his injuries were not serious.

It's not clear yet what, if any, items were taken from the shed.

I've been bitten by dogs on more than one occasion, when reaching to pet them, which is why I own a cat.

@Michael Hayes...I was once told you NEVER put your hand out to a strange dog, unless you WANT to get bitten. To many dogs, that extended hand is a sign of agression. You should stand still and let the dog sniff, and *usually* if the dog turns and brings his body around you may pet them. You should also not try to pet their head. This was advice from a professional dog trainer - Air Force canine unit, who also works with the CT State Police.

That's a great point. Except dog owners are always saying, "Oh, he's friendly." Yeah right.

I'm a USPS City Mail Carrier, and have been bitten more times than I want to count. It's always the small dogs that feel they have something to prove .EVERY dog that has bitten/attacked me ( > 6) was under 40 lbs. and the owner said is OK .
