A Colchester couple was arrested Thursday on charges that they attempted to pay for a house with a fake check for close to $500,000, according to the Glastonbury Police Department.

Kimberly and Scott Gross, both 41, of 559 Old Hartford Road, Colchester, were each arrested by warrant on charges of attempted first-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, second-degree forgery, conspiracy to commit second-degree forgery, third-degree forgery and conspiracy to commit third-degree forgery.

Both individuals were arrested by warrant after police say they gave an altered check for $472,204 to a Glastonbury attorney for a house they were attempting to purchase in Colchester.  The attorney told police that he noticed something was wrong when the check began to peel apart.

Police said that the couple changed the numbers on an authentic check and then pasted it onto a fake one.

A real estate agent asked for proof of funds and the pair offered a forged bank statement, police said.

They were each released on $25,000 bonds and are due in Manchester Superior Court on June 19.
