Medical Emergencies Top Haddam's February Fire Calls

Haddam Volunteer Fire Co. Reports Activity, Training and Retirement of Longtime Member

Members of the Haddam Volunteer Fire Co. responded to 42 calls for emergency services in February. 

Medical emergencies, 26. Fires, alarms etc., 6. Motor vehicle crashes, 5. Marine emergencies, 0. Other, wires down, etc., 5.                  

February was a busy month for training. Drills were conducted on Rapid Intervention Team techniques for rescuing a downed frefighter, Smart Triage for organizing patients at mass casualty incidents, and self-contained breathing apparatus for new members as well as experienced. The annual Occupational Safety & Health Administration-required fit testing to ensure all members who wear SCBA have a proper face seal was conducted.

Haddam Fire also assisted the East Haddam and South District departments. On Feb. 4, an engine 6-13 and tanker 2-13 were sent to Porgess Road in East Haddam to supply water during a fire that destroyed a historic colonial home.  During the evening of Feb. 22, engine 1-13 and tanker 2-13 went to Middletown to assist the South District Fire Department with a structure fire on Chamberlain Hill Road. In addition to providing water on scene, the units stood by at the South District Station and responded to a motor vehicle accident on behalf of South District.

There will be a recruiting open house April 30 from 1-6 p.m. at the Haddam Volunteer Fire Co. Station #1 at 439 Saybrook Road in Higganum. Demonstrations, a simulated house smoke evacuation trailer and children’s entertainment attractions will be available. Refreshments will be served, tours of the fire house provided, and a pasta dinner will be sponsored by the Haddam Junior Volunteer Fire Co.

A member of the Haddam Volunteer Fire Co. recently retired from active service, and has moved into the ranks of life membership. Samantha Houska joined the department in 1992. 

During her 18 years as a member of the Fire Co., Houska served on numerous committees and held several leadership positions. She served on the House Committee, the Old Timer’s Night Committee, Recognition Committee and served as building engineer for two terms. In addition she served as an emergency medical technician.
