Hot Off The Press: East Haddam Volunteer Fire Department News

East Haddam Volunteer Fire Department incident reports and 'Truck of the Month'.

The East Haddam Volunteer Fire Department had another busy month in June, responding to several motor-vehicle accidents, a structure fire, and power lines down all over the East Haddam and Moodus area.

The day of June 9th was particularly busy. Severe thunderstorms had rolled through the state that day, with high winds and heavy rain, causing trees to fall, road closures, power lines down and power outages. At one point in time, CL&P had reported over 99,000 power outages statewide.

From approximately 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. that day, the department responded to seven calls of wires down, along with trees on wires and in the roadway, and finished the day with a motor-vehicle accident on Mitchell Road in East Haddam.

One balmy evening in June, Patch just happened upon an unscheduled training session that was taking place on the Lower Moodus Reservoir Boat Launch in Moodus and stopped in for observation and a photo session with East Haddam Volunteer Fire Department's 'Truck of the Month', Engine 1-15.

Ray Swol, Assistant Training Officer, was instructing a few of the other EHVFD members about emergency procedures, guages and pressure readings, equipment maintenance, etc. for the truck.

'Engine 1-15' is a 2003 Ferrara fire apparatus, with a Spartan-Gladiator chassis. It has a Cummings diesel engine with an Allison automatic transmission. Armed with a tank capacity of 750 gallons and a 2000 gallon-per-minute pump, this truck is considered an 'Attack Piece' and is often one of the the first trucks in to respond to a fire. The cab seats six officers, and the truck is equipped with a foam tank, fire extinguishers, miscellaneous hand tools and SCBA's or 'self-contained breathing apparatus.'
