Electrical Short May Have Caused East Haddam Home Fire

Current investigations into the structure fire that occurred Sunday morning in East Haddam indicate that the fire may have caused by an "undetermined type of electrical short," according to Haddam Volunteer Fire Company Public Relations Liaison.

The following information was provided by Haddam Volunteer Fire Company Public Relations Liaison Jesse Drake.

Around 4 AM on Sunday, May 26, the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to a fully involved structure fire on Stony Brook Drive in East Haddam. The house was completely lost as a result of the blaze, and a vehicle was severely damaged, but homeowners escaped the fire.

Current investigations indicate that the fire that destroyed the two-story home may have been caused by an “undetermined type of electrical short,” according to a press release. The East Haddam Fire Marshal's office said in the release that their investigation also “indicates a lack of working smoke alarms.”

According to the press release, the homeowners were awakened by the sound of glass shattering, a result of the intense heat. The homeowners escaped but one person was transported to Middlesex Hospital with symptoms of smoke inhalation. He was treated and later released.

Firefighters from Haddam and East Haddam responded to the blaze, along with firefighters from Colchester, Chester, East Hampton and Old Lyme. Several other area departments also provided tankers.

The fire remains under investigation by the East Haddam Fire Marshal's office.
