East Haddam Police Activity Jan. 6-15

FAILURE TO APPEAR IN COURT, THIRD-DEGREE ASSAULT, DISORDERLY CONDUCT, RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT — On Jan. 6, Christian Mock, of 19 Ridgewood Road, Moodus, was arrested for the above charges.

CAR VS. TREE, TRAVELING TOO FAST FOR CONDITIONS, DRIVING UNDER THE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS — On Jan.7, John Vandermaelen, 54, of 2 Orchard Road, East Haddam, was involved in a one-car accident at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Landing Hill Road in East Haddam, in which he struck a tree, and was subsequently arrested for the above charges. Vandermaelen was taken in and processed at the Connecticut State Police, Troop K, Colchester, and then later released on a $500 non-surety bond. Court date is Jan. 19 at Middlesex Superior Court in Middletown.

FAILURE TO GRANT THE RIGHT-OF-WAY AT AN INTERSECTION — On Jan. 7, Ronald Vliet, 67, of (no street address given), Wethersfield, driving a 2006 Volkswagon Jetta, and James Nowick, 53, of Stockburger Road, Moodus, driving a 2002 Chevy K-3500, were involved in a two-vehicle accident at approximately 11:15 a.m. in the area of Route 149 and Pickeral Drive in Colchester. Vliet was issued a written warning for failure to grant the right-of-way at an intersection. No injuries were reported, and both vehicles sustained minor damage.

VIOLATION OF PROBATION — On Jan.10, Kevin Osalza, 20, of 323 Lakeshore Drive, East Haddam, turned himself in to the Connecticut State Police, Troop K, Colchester, for an active Paperless Re-Arrest Warrant Network warrant for violation of probation, and was released on a $10,000 surety bond, with a court date of Jan. 11.

VANDALISM, THIRD-DEGREE CRIMINAL MISCHIEF  AND VIOLATION OF HOURS OF OPERATION IN A STATE PARK OR FOREST — On Jan. 10, Jaime Branciforte, 36, of 67 Flanders Road, East Hampton, was discovered by police at the Sunrise Resort State Park in Moodus, at approximately 8:30 p.m., with a blank checkbook allegedly found at the resort on him. Some of the buildings on premises had been illegally entered, and there was broken glass. Branciforte was arrested for the above charges.

LARCENY FROM A MOTOR VEHICLE — On Jan. 11, a resident on East Haddam-Colchester Turnpike reported a camera and an iPod missing from a vehicle parked in his driveway, and police are investigating.

MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT/EVADING — On Jan. 12, an Algonquin Trail, Moodus, resident reported to police that his vehicle had been hit and damaged while it was left parked at the 7-11 convenience store on Falls Road (Route 149) in Moodus, and the case is under investigation.

TWO-CAR COLLISION — On Jan. 13, at approximately 8:44 a.m., Barbara Vasile, 48, of Scoville Landing, East Haddam, was traveling along Main Street in a 2011 Nissan Xterra, and had stopped at a stop sign near Route 82.  Robert Berkley, 49, of Westwood Drive, Moodus, while traveling in the same direction behind Vasile, driving a 2006 Dodge Dakota, was unable to stop on a snowy roadway and collided with Vasile's vehicle. Berkley was issued a verbal warning for traveling to fast for conditions.

IMPROPER TURN, OPERATION OF A MOTOR VEHICLE IN VIOLATION OF LICENSE CLASSIFICATION, DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS — On Jan. 15, Mark Castillo, 51, of 6 General Lyon Road, Eastford, had been stopped by police on East Haddam-Colchester Turnpike in East Haddam at approximately 8:51 p.m., and was subsequently arrested for the above charges.
