East Haddam Police Activity Reports March 2-9

The East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K, Colchester, report the following incidents:

CAR VS. US POSTAL VEHICLE — On March 2, at 12:02 p.m., Elaine Kone, 55, of Mallard Cove, East Hampton, was parked at a mailbox on Route 82, just south of Cold Spring Road in East Haddam, in a 1992 Grumman LLV postal vehicle. James Keevers, 42,  of Savarese Lane, Burlington, was exiting a private driveway in a 2008 Nissan Titan-Pro, and while attempting to back out, struck the postal vehicle. No injuries were reported, but police issued Keevers an infraction for unsafe backing.

POSSESSION OF DRUG PARAPHERNALIA — On March 4, police arrested a 17-year-old juvenile on School Road in East Haddam for the above charge.

BURGLARY AND LARCENY — On March 4, a Hopyard Road, East Haddam, resident, who had been watching a home for a neighbor while they were out of state, reported the theft of two chainsaws and a "Kubota" tractor from the garage. Police are investigating.

POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA — On March 6, Daniel O'Mara IV, 21, of 26 Berry Road, East Haddam, was arrested for the above charge.

EVADING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT AND MAKING A RESTRICTED TURN — On March 7, police arrived at the scene of a motor vehicle accident, finding the vehicle unoccupied. Upon contacting the registered owner of the vehicle, police were told that a friend of the owner, Jared Skut, 21, of 176 Haywardville Road, East Haddam, had allegedly been operating the 1996 Chevy Monte Carlo. Police were later able to locate Skut at his residence. Apparently, Skut had been traveling eastbound on Haywardville Road at 1:02 a.m., when he lost control of the vehicle and swerved off the roadway, striking a rock and some brush, causing damage to the front end and undercarriage of the vehicle. Skut had not reported the accident, and so was taken into custody by police, and arrested for evading and making a restricted (unsafe) turn. He was released on a $500 non-surety bond, and is scheduled to appear in Middletown Court on March 16 at 9 a.m.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS — On March 9, at 3:04 a.m., Brian Scameheorn, 40, of 26 William F. Palmer Road, Moodus, had reported striking a deer. After failing a field sobriety test administered by police, Scameheorn was arrested for the above charge.
