Anthony Garofalo was arrested Monday on a charge of murdering his girlfriend, 30-year-old East Hampton woman Jini Barnum, the East Hampton Police Department announced in a news release.
Garofalo, 38 faces charges of murder, first-degree strangulation and tampering with physical evidence, the news release said.
He was arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court on Monday and is being held on a $1 million bond. The case was continued, police said.
According to police, Garofalo reported Barnum missing on July 29. He told police the pair, who lived together in East Hampton with their infant child, had gotten into an argument and Barnum left the house to take a walk.
Barnum hadn’t been seen for roughly two months until her remains were uncovered in a shallow grave in Glastonbury on Sept. 9. The state medical examiner ruled her death a homicide by strangulation.
According to the news release, multiple agencies assisted in the investigation, including the Glastonbury police, the state Department of Criminal Justice, a K-9 search team, the State Police’s major crimes division and the state Department of Corrections.
Garofalo is a registered sex offender. He has been incarcerated since the summer for allegedly violating his parole — a charge stemming from Barnum’s disappearance, state officials told Patch.
