Attempted Residential Break-In, Garbage Truck vs. Cable Truck and Scrap-Metal Theft

East Haddam area police activity reports.

The East Haddam Police and the Connecticut State Police, Troop K report the following incidents: 

OPERATING AN UNREGISTERED COMMERCIAL VEHICLE AND MAKING AN IMPROPER TURN - On Oct. 31 at approximately 12:50 p.m., Benjamin Bagnati, 23, of Bokum Road, Old Saybrook was traveling along Haywardville Road in East Haddam in a 2007 Kenworth garbage-removal truck. Kevin Jacoby, 32, of Trumbull Highway, Lebanon was traveling in the opposite direction on the road, in a 2008 Ford F-450 commercial cable company truck. Police received a complaint that the garbage truck had crossed the center line in the roadway and impacted the cable truck's driver's side mirror, and then continued to drive away without stopping. Police later located Bagnati, who stated he hadn't realized that the vehicles had collided. Bagnati was issued an infraction for operating an unregistered vehicle and a verbal warning for making an improper turn.

OPERATING WITH A SUSPENDED LICENSE, FAILURE TO MAINTAIN MINIMUM INSURANCE, AND FAILURE TO DRIVE UPON THE RIGHT - On Oct. 31 at approximately 4:50 p.m., Ross Coughlin, 26, of Margerie Street, Bristol, was traveling southbound on East Haddam-Moodus Road (Route 149) in East Haddam, driving a 2003 Chevy Tracker. Police say Coughlin swerved across the double yellow lines and side-swiped a 2010 Dodge Ram pick-up truck being driven by Angelo Cerrone, 44, of Young Street, East Hampton, who was traveling northbound. No injuries were reported, but police issued Coughlin a motor-vehicle summons for operating with a suspended license, failure to maintain insurance, and failure to drive upon the right.

UNSAFE BACKING OF A MOTOR-VEHICLE - On Nov. 1 at approximately 9:15 a.m., Rachel Simon, 18, of Bull Hill Road, Colchester was traveling northbound on Route 149 (Main Street) in East Haddam in a 2002 Nissan Altima. Elaine Kone, 55, of Mallard Cove, East Hampton was backing out of a driveway on Main Street, operating a 2002 Gruman postal vehicle, when the two vehicles collided. No injuries were reported, but Kone was issued a written warning for unsafe backing.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS AND FAILURE TO ILLUMINATE TAIL LAMPS - On Nov. 4 at approximately 1:11 a.m., police observed a red pick-up truck in the area of Mott Lane in Moodus, operating without taillights. David Tardy, 22, of 51 Falls-Bashan Road, Moodus was pulled over by police and charged with DUI and failure to illuminate tail lamps, after failing standardized field sobriety tests. Tardy was arrested and processed at Troop K, then later released on a $500 non-surety bond. He was scheduled to appear in court on 11/16/11 at Middlesex Superior Court in Middletown.

CRIMINAL TRESPASS AND LARCENY - On Nov. 4 at 12:00 p.m., two subjects were discovered attempting to take property from a residence on Stockburger Road in Moodus, with the intention of turning it in for scrap metal, police reported. Colton Owens, 20, of 92 Parum Road, Colchester and Gregory Hallowell, 21, of 117 East Haddam-Colchester Turnpike, East Haddam were both arrested and charged with 1st-degree criminal trespass and 3rd-degree larceny. They were each held on a $1,500 bond and scheduled for arraignment at Middlesex Superior Court on 11/7/11.

ATTEMPTED RESIDENTIAL BREAK-IN - Sometime between Thursday, Nov. 3 at about 12:00 p.m., and Friday, Nov. 4 at approximately 8:00 p.m., unknown person(s) tried to gain entry to a home on Cold Springs Road in East Haddam. Entry was attempted by trying to force open a window located in the rear of the residence. The incident is under investigation, and anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious is asked to contact the East Haddam Police Department at 860-873-1226 or the Confidential Tip Line at 860-873-5013.
