NHRMS Geography Bee Winner

Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. Schools with students in grades four through eight are eligible for this entertaining and challenging test of geographic knowledge.

NHRMS, in East Haddam, held the local Geography Bee on Friday, January 24th with ten competitors. These ten students advanced to the championship round by excelling in a preliminary grade level competition consisting of individual oral questions based on US and world geography. During a full school assembly, our host Andrew Riccio and judge Dana Hyatt, challenged the ten finalists with a series of oral and written questions. Our 2014 champion, who narrowly won in overtime, is Ben Pattavina. With the entire student body quietly watching, Ben secured the win by identifying Indonesia as the location of the islands Bali and Madura. This year’s runner up was Isaac Manful. Good luck to Ben as he represents our school at the state level competition.
