Letter to the Editor: In Support of Melissa Ziobron and Melissa Schlag

Vote SMART, vote for the candidates you feel would help our country and state go in the right direction.

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter in support of two local candidates for the CT State Legislature - Melissa Ziobron (R) for State Representative of the 34th District (East Hamptom, East Haddam and part of Colchester) and Melissa Schlag (GP) for State Senate 33rd District (Chester, Clinton, Colchester, Deep River, East Haddam, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Lyme, a portion of Old Saybrook, Portland, and Westbrook).  Both these candidates have, in my view, made an effort to reach out to the residents of their respective districts, and promised to represent OUR interests in the legislature, NOT the interests of the party flag they are running under.  This represents a TRUE government OF the people, BY the people and FOR the people.

Ms Ziobron has promised to support the residents and businesses of her district from the excessive tax burdens that stifle the success and growth of our economy, while still allowing the government to protect the rights of individuals and small business owners.  THIS is a position that many politicians are afraid to take, since it would go against the hand that feeds them (large corporations) and the political parties (which have gotten too big for their own good and refuse to give up any of that power to the common person).  Ms Schlag decided to run to give the residents of our district a VOICE in the State Legislature after the state decided to swap waterfront land in Haddam (on the CT River) with land that could not be developed in the rocky woods next to a state forest.  Many complaints from local residents went unheard and unacknowledged by the representatives who WE elected to look after our best interests on a topic that was, to many people, detrimental to the residents of the district.

I am also writing this letter to urge voters to take a good look at the candidates and their views in this election year.  Many of us will be voting for people who will control the direction our nation and state go for the next two to six years.  Vote SMART, vote for the candidates you feel would help our country and state go in the right direction.  Don’t be like the person who put up signs in their yard for all the Democratic Candidates and forgot to take out the sign saying, “Re-Elect LINDA ORANGE, Democrat.”  She’s NOT running again this year, and is no longer even REPRESENTING the district I saw the sign in!

Vote PEOPLE OVER PARTY!  Not Party over People...

Sincerely yours,

David Cassenti

The State of Connecticut has billions in unfunded pension obligations thanks to the money managementRead More ablities of our state treasurers over the years. Only an AFSCME union boss would trust them.

Resident- Let me get this straight you believe that - BOE did not approve this..... no one saw theRead More report card before it went out ? and I am not sure who has since ? Sad! Well it clearly demonstrates the lack of competence and how well the BOE is informed the in the area of our children's education.

Dear save our schools : I have not heard that rumor.... I think where that may have started wasRead More with some people looking at the old middle school and thinking about using it for a vo-ag school, but not at all connected with our school system. I have not heard anything for a while on that whole subject. I have not heard about accreditation issues either... I know about 12 years ago or maybe longer there were issues. My kids are not in the HS. Normally I support our BOE. And it should be noted that the BOE did not approve this... I would tend to bet that if you polled every board member - no one saw this report card system before it went out, and I am not sure who has seen it since. With kids in the middle school now I am keeping an ear open about the HS.

Dear EH Resident, Thank you for a well written and very informative communication. I am a parent ofRead More a recent Hale Ray graduate and have a student currently in the school system. My children are five years apart and it is down right scary to realize how much our school systems quality and rigor has been degraded in recent years. These changes are the direct result of the ill guided Board of Education. Recently I have heard that our high school will soon be becoming a vocational school and will not be accredited . This maybe a rumor but the current path we are on certainly supports the rumor. The loss of accreditation will mean that the diploma our children earn upon graduation will not be accepted by higher education institutions. The mantra of doing less with more is destroying our community. Our children are being robbed of a successful future because of their penny wise pound poor management. We must demand change and accountability from our Board of Education!
