8 out of 9 establishments pass tobacco compliance checks in Haddam-Killingworth

On 01/07/13, both the Haddam and Killingworth Resident Trooper's and members of the State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program (TPEP), conducted unannounced compliance inspections of establishments that sell tobacco products. The inspections were performed in an effort to determine compliance with state laws concerning the prohibition of the sale of cigarettes and/or tobacco products to youth under the age of eighteen. The Healthy Communities-Healthy Kids Coalition will be following up with all establishments to provide educational information on tobacco compliance and tobacco prevention information.

Under the direction and supervision of DMHAS investigations, an underage youth, employed by the Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program, entered the establishments and attempted to purchase tobacco products.

A total of (9) unannounced compliance inspections were conducted. Of this total, (1) establishment was found to be in violation of General Statutes of Connecticut, Sec. 53-344(b), Sale of Tobacco to Minors under eighteen.

 

The cigarette dealer license holder at each establishment also faces additional administrative sanctions from the Department of Revenue Services, the state agency that issues the cigarette Dealer Licenses.

 

The establishment found to be in violation was the Pit Stop Sunoco station (JD Food Mart LLC ) at 1016 Killingworth Rd, Higganum, CT.

 

It should also be noted that the following businesses were found to be in compliance with the law:
