September Report

September was a solemn month for the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company, which said goodbye to two of its own.

Members of the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to 45 calls for emergency services in September. Here’s a breakdown of calls:

Medical Emergencies – 25
Fires, alarms etc. – 11
Motor Vehicle Accidents – 8
Other – 1

September was a solemn month for the Fire Company, which said goodbye to two of its own.

Longtime Firefighter David “Davey” Jones, who faithfully served for more than 38 years, passed away on Sept. 14. He was 73.

Davey was awarded the "Superior Performance" award in 2008 and voted Firefighter of the Quarter in 2011. He was Mechanical Engineer for many of his years with the Fire Company.

An Honor Guard stood at his wake on Sept. 18 and escorted Davey on his beloved Peter Pirsch Fire Engine from Biega Funeral Home to his final resting place at the State Veterans' Cemetery in Middletown on Sept. 19. Davey, a former aircraft mechanic in the United States Air Force, was laid to rest will full military honors.

Less than two weeks later, the HVFCo. said goodbye to Kenneth Sekscenski, a Life Member who passed away on Sept. 26. Kenny was 64.

Elected as a member in 1976, Kenny received Life Membership in 1991. He served the Fire Company in a variety of capacities including Radio Engineer. An Honor Guard posted during his wake at Biega’s on Sept. 28. His funeral with full military honors took place at the State Veterans' Cemetery on Sept. 30.

September drills included station maintenance/cleaning and a walk-through of Haddam-Killingworth High School. HVFCo. members also provided standby fire coverage at the Durham Fair Sept. 26-29 and offered truck tours for fair-goers.

In training news, Firefighters Robert Norton Jr., Jed Morrissey and Capt. Rob Lenois attended Rescue Technician Core courses at the Connecticut Fire Academy in Windsor Locks.
