May Report

One of the bigger events that the Fire Company participates in each year is Haddam's Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Service, held on May 26.

Members of the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to 40 calls for emergency services in May:

Medical Emergencies – 20
Fires, alarms etc. – 8
Motor Vehicle Accidents – 11
Other – 1

Haddam Fire’s Stair Climb team was praised May 1 in the State Senate for being the top fundraising team among fire departments at the Fight for Air Climb in Hartford.

Sen. Art Linares, R-Westbrook, read the names of Dan Casey, Chet Crocco, Jeff Doskos, Robert Norton Jr., Mike Mancuso, Jed Morrissey, Jay Selmer and Kate Zarbo as part of a “Point of Privilege” in which constituents are recognized prior to the legislative session.

“We wanted to honor the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company here in this historic building to let the rest of the state know how proud we are of their efforts,” Linares said.

Haddam Fire’s 37th Annual Old Timers’ Night took place on May 17. The multi-generational tradition traces back to 1977. Current members pay tribute to former members, in addition to cooking and serving dinner. Many honored guests left with raffle prizes, and the evening concluded with a bonfire.

One of the bigger events that the Fire Company participates in each year is Haddam's Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Service, held on May 26. The night before, members of the Haddam Volunteer Fire Auxiliary peeled and chopped potatoes in preparation of the clam chowder sale that follows the parade. Junior members and firefighters started making the chowder at 4 a.m., sales of which benefit local organizations administered by the Auxiliary and Fire Company.

Several members attended the wake and funeral for New Britain Deputy Chief David Fiori. The 59-year-old suffered a heart attack at his desk the night before Memorial Day. Fiori had been a firefighter for 36 years and was well respected by the members of Haddam Fire.

In membership news, three new probationary members were sworn in: Jeff Hartke, Nate Bugbee and Amanda Commesso, our fifth active female member.

Probationary firefighter Chet Crocco was EMT-certified, and the following members also completed a Connecticut Safe Boating and Personal Watercraft course administered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary: James Saucier, James Saucier Jr., Kyle Vallera, Joe Tomasso, Kate Zarbo, Rob Lenois, Jeff Hartke, Gene Melanson and Seb Barbagallo.

In training news, members attended lecture on the transport and hazards of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and tested the drafting systems on various apparatus.
