Members of the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to 37 calls for emergency services in February.

Medical Emergencies – 17
Fires, alarms, etc. – 12
Motor Vehicle Accidents – 8

Several motor vehicles accidents in February were partly the result of poor winter weather driving conditions. On Feb. 15, members responded after a car lost control in snowy conditions and struck a pole on Killingworth Road. Five people in the vehicle were transported to Middlesex Hospital via Haddam and Killingworth Ambulance. On Feb. 22, the Fire Company responded to a vehicle that struck a snowbank and rolled over on Little City Road. The driver escaped without injuries.

The Fire Company took possession of its new Tanker 2-13 in February. The new Kenworth tanker replaces the old 2-13, a GMC General/Ranger commissioned in 1987. The biggest difference is an increase in water-carrying capacity from 2,500 to 2,700 gallons and updated equipment like a hydraulic drop tank holder and aluminum drop tank that allow water supply to be set up more efficiently and with fewer people.

Members said their goodbyes to Life Member John. E. Yantosh. He was 82. John was elected as a member in 1949 and earned Life Membership in 1970. Members stood as honor guards at the Funeral Liturgy on Feb. 28 at St. Peter Church in Higganum.

A new probationary member was sworn in at February’s monthly meeting. Tony Lafo was a member of the company in 1999 and served as a firefighter for Guilford Fire Department from 1988 to 1999. Tony is a 1996 graduate of the University of New Haven with a bachelor's degree in arson investigation.

Drills included a Haz-Mat and SCBA maintenance refresher.
