Portrait Painting Workshop

Learn and practice the sight-size approach to drawing or painting portraits from life using natural light. This course provides you with eight hours to study a single portrait pose.

Sight-size helps to quickly establish scale and proportion through a direct comparison of your drawing and the model. This enables you to make more accurate judgements about which lines, shapes, and values to render.

By studying the model from life in natural light, you are presented with the challenge of recognizing the unchanging relationships in the values, even as they appear to change with the light.

Natural light also provides you with more natural colors and more subtle and softer transitions.

Instruction and guidance will be given as you progress and Drew will also paint the portrait as a demonstration.

The workshop will begin with a brief discussion of notes written by students of John Singer Sargent regarding his painting habits. We will continue to discuss these as we progress as they apply to our portraits.
