POLL: How Worried Are You About Wednesday's Potential Winter Storm?

A significant winter storm is making its way east towards Connecticut. Will it be a bust in the Haddams?

 

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection has issued the following winter storm update:

The latest computer models continue to forecast that a complex and significant winter storm will impact our area Wednesday afternoon, lasting into Thursday. A low pressure system is forecast to move into the Great Lakes on Wednesday and re-develop off the New Jersey Coast Wednesday night. The following forecast is based on the latest model data:

Wednesday Morning...Increasing cloudiness early Wednesday morning with lows in the mid 20’s at daybreak.

Wednesday Afternoon... Snow moving into the state from West to East between Noon and 2:00 p.m. The snow is expected to quickly become heavy at times by 2:00 p.m. Snow, heavy at times is forecast to continue for several hours before changing to a mix in Southwestern CT by 5:00 p.m. and into the Hartford area by 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday Night and Thursday...Mixed precipitation in Northern CT with mostly rain in Central and Southern CT becoming lighter by 10:00 PM and continuing overnight. Lows in the 30’s. Some glazing is possible in the colder valleys. The precipitation is expected to end gradually as light snow during the day on Thursday with highs in the 30’s.

The main threat from this storm will be from a 4 – 6 hour period of moderate to heavy snow that is forecast to move into Connecticut just after noon. Temperatures are expected to drop from the upper 30’s into the low 30’s at the start of the snow and roads are expected to become quickly snow and slush covered within a few hours. A moderate to major impact is possible during the afternoon rush hour with low visibilities, moderate to heavy falling snow and snow cover on roads making driving very hazardous.

Total accumulations before the changeover to mixed precipitation are currently expected to range from 2 – 4 inches in Southern CT, 3 - 6 inches in the Hartford Area and up to 8 inches in the NW Hills.

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will continue to monitor the latest forecasts and will issue another update at 9:00 AM Wednesday Morning.
