Wayward cow gets police escort on Route 9 friday morning.

A brown cow was reported moving along with the Memorial Day weekend traffic on Route 9 friday morning at around 11am. The cow was seen near exit 10 at the Middletown/Haddam line.

According to one witness, several motorists got out of their cars in an attempt to safely direct the cow off the highway.  One motorist even tried to lasso the cow. The cow eventually ran off into the woods.

About 30 minutes later, what appeared to be the same cow, had wandered back onto Rroute 9. According to Mike Trahan, who witnessed the event, a state trooper "was forced to drive 5 to 10 mies per hour" in an attempt to "keep the cow in the median as traffic backed up."

State police were able to confirm that there was a wayward cow on the road and the unnamed trooper was able to protect the cow from oncoming traffic while keeping motorists safe. Animal control was called in by the state police to assist with the cow.

Trahan joked "that's one smart cow; there's a lot of hamburgers eaten on Memorial Day.  I don't think it wanted to be part of that celebration."

Our hats off to the trooper whose job is truly  "no bull".
