Local Farmers Offer Food Shares to Families in 2013

Two friendly farmers, Jess Stone of East Haddam and Jeff Savitsky of Colchester, have joined forces to bring Common Ground CSA to local communities.

Information provided and written by Jess Stone:

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and represents a pledge of support from individuals to growers. CSA members, or shareholders, share the risks and rewards of farming by paying for food shares prior to the growing season, which offsets the farmers’ initial expenses. In exchange for upfront payment, shareholders receive weekly shares of vegetables and fruits throughout the growing season.  This unique partnership between shareholder and farmer is a whole-hearted effort to support local farming and the local economy.

Common Ground CSA was established in 2012 and is backed by many years of agricultural experience.  Jess and Jeff strive to grow the healthiest, most delicious food, organically, and look forward to bringing delicious farm foods to local tables for many seasons to come.  By joining Common Ground CSA, members are supporting two local, small-scale farms and sustainable growing practices.  Other benefits include direct access to fresh, high-quality, nutritious foods, a drastic reduction in the use of packaging, a decreased dependence on fossil fuels, and confidence in knowing the origin of your food supply.

Another reason to consider joining Common Ground CSA is that it offers a unique shopping experience to its members.  Rather than picking up your pre-filled basket share at the farm, Common Ground CSA offers its members the opportunity to shop for what they want to eat.  It is similar to shopping at the grocery store.  For example, if a member does not want to eat a rutabaga, he/she does not have to add it to the basket, but he/she may be craving more carrots or tomatoes instead.  In addition to the vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruits that Common Ground CSA offers its shareholders, other local products such as eggs, meats, milk and cheeses, jams and jellies, honey and syrup, breads and coffee, may be purchased on CSA pick-up days at the farm.  So, it may be stated that Common Ground CSA is offering one-stop shopping for local farm foods to make planning your meals and your time, easier.

Applications are available now upon request.  CSA payment deadlines are March 1st, April 1st and May 1st.
