UPDATED: Walters Declares Emergency in East Haddam, Cautions Parents About Trick-or-Treating

Haddam has about 50 percent of homes and businesses out of power still while Killingworth has about 75 percent.

East Haddam First Selectman Mark Walters issued the following statement today:

This is an important message from Emergency Management Director Craig Mansfield and First Selectman Mark Walter.   East Haddam is currently 94% without power.  CL&P line and tree crews are currently working to clear roads and wires with the assistance of public works personnel. As soon as debris is cleared, restoration work will begin. Because of the extent of the outage this may take several days. Please prepare accordingly.   Residents are reminded to report all power outages to CL&P at 800-286-2000.  We are also asking residents to report any downed wires  or blocked roads in the immediate area of their house to the East Haddam EOC at 860-873-5036.

The information center located at the East Haddam Senior Center will close at 6PM today.  Schools are closed for Wed and the Town offices will be open normal business hours for information.  You can call the town offices at 860-873-5020.   The High School will open for showers and charging stations for electronics from 4-9 PM tonight and a light meal will be served from 5-7 PM.    On Wed AM the High School will be open for showers from 6-10 AM and a light breakfast will be served from 6-8 AM.  Additionally, showers will be available from 4-9 PM in the afternoon with a light meal served again from 5-7PM.  We are planning to have limited bottled water and Meals Ready to Eat available for distribution by tomorrow evening.  Non-drinking water will also be available at the High School during these hours.  Please bring your own containers.
East Haddam does not plan to open a local overnight shelter at this time. If you require overnight accommodations, information on open shelters can be found by calling the Info- line at 211.   Parents are cautioned about taking their kids trick treating door to door with the potential remaining for downed wires along streets.  The town’s Project Halloween is still on from 5:30- 7:30 PM but will be moved from the Elementary School to the High School.   There are now local restaurants that are open in town including Hill Top Barbeque, LaVita Gustosa and the Gelston House.    The East Haddam Firehouse located on Town Street will be staffed 24 hours a day until future notice.  You can call stop by or call the firehouse at 860-873-5036 anytime of day if assistance is needed.

The village of Tylerville in Haddam remained eerily dark at midday today as half of the town remained without power as Hurricane Sandy downed trees and power lines around town.

In East Haddam and Killingworth, however, the situation is even worse, with more than 90 percent of East Haddam in the dark and nearly 80 percent of Killingworth homes and businesses out of electricity still.

Town halls in East Haddam and Haddam were closed today alond with all schools in all three towns.

About 30 roads were impassable Monday night, officials said. Several stores are closed, however the nearby Sanibel is open.

At the East Haddam Town Hall a huge tree was toppled over and one of the buildings windows was blown off and lay shattered on the ground.

Some of the few bright spots in the region were Village Pizza in Haddam, which was open for business Tuesday afternoon, along with Shagbark Lumber in East Haddam and Sanibel Farms.
