Cookies Funding Fuel and Food

No cookies out of a box at St. Stephens' church kitchen. These chocolate chip cookies are from scratch and are baked for a good cause.

The Cookie Sisters of St. Stephens Church took over the church’s kitchen on Friday evening to bake chocolate chip cookies to raise funds for the East Haddam Food and Fuel Banks. Don’t miss getting your share of the 400 mouth-watering cookies, for sale this morning at Shagbark Lumber & Farm Supply, located at 1 Mt. Parnassus Road.

“This is a prelude to our Annual Christmas Cookie Fair on Dec. 10,” said Ann DiSiglia. “We thought it would be fun to do the baking together.”

In the difficult economic downturn we are experiencing, more people ask for assistance from the Food and Fuel Banks making it difficult for the funds to stay abreast of demand. Consequently, they always need assistance. Funds donated now will ensure there won’t be a reoccurrence of last Oct. when the East Haddam Fuel Fund ran out of money. This was the first time this had happened since its founding in 1977.

Karl Stofko, treasurer of the East Haddam Fuel Fund said, “We are in better shape this year but we always need donations.”

For ease of preparation, the Cookie Sisters decided to make only chocolate chip cookies but it will be a different situation in the Annual Christmas Cookie Fair. Instead of baking in the church’s kitchen, each baker makes her specialty Christmas cookies at home.

Everyone who purchases cookies this morning will receive a $1 discount coupon off a two-pound purchase at the Christmas Cookie Fair.

There are two versions of how chocolate chip cookies originated. One is that Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1930 was making chocolate cookies and ran out of baker’s chocolate so she substituted broken pieces of chocolate . Wakefield expected the chunks to melt into the rest of the cookie. When they didn’t the chocolate chip cookie was born.

Wakefield was an entrepreneur and sold the recipe to Nestle in exchange for a lifetime supply of chocolate chips.

The second version is that Chef George Boucher was making sugar cookies when the vibrations from a large electric mixer knocked bars of chocolate stored on the shelf above into the dough. He then broke the bars into pieces and the result was chocolate chip cookies.

The matter where the idea came from, chocolate chip cookies are a favorite of many.
