Connecticut's Own Ron Roy

His books are available at two local libraries.

There is nothing quite like the joy of reading a book that you just can’t put down. When you and your child find a series where at the end of the chapter they are begging for more you know you have found the winner, and the motivation to read has been found.

Connecticut author Ron Roy is that kind of magical children’s author that captures your child and thankfully doesn’t let go. According to his website, Ron was born in Hartford and was a shy child who was inspired early by a teacher. This teacher ignited the passion for teaching in Ron and he went on to be a fourth grade teacher as well. He soon began to write and after many rejections, and much perseverance, he finally published a book in 1978.

In 1997 Ron began a series of books called the A to Z Mysteries. This series of books contains 26 volumes, one for each letter of the alphabet, and follows 3 young sleuths as they solve mysteries in their community. Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose are the main characters of all 26 stories and are friends that collect information, problem solve and ultimately crack the case.

On his website Ron writes, “I believe strongly that one can write a fun, gripping story without resorting to violence. My books contain no weapons, no fighting, no swear words, no violence.”  He has achieved his goal.

As these stories are read you will find that at the end of each chapter there is a “cliff hanger” and that you just have to go on to the next chapter. Once you finish the book you will be compelled to find out what the next mystery is. Whether you read them aloud as a family, or your early chapter book reader reads them on their own, these books will create an excitement about reading.

Since the completion of the A to Z Mysteries, Ron Roy has gone on to create two additional mystery series.  The Capital Mysteries which all take place in Washington, DC.  In these books you will meet a new mystery solving duo as you also “visit” historical landmarks of our nation’s capital and learn a few facts along the way.  Finally, Ron Roy has a new series that features the younger siblings of the crew from the A to Z Mysteries.  This series, The Calendar Mysteries, are written for the first grader to second grader.

The A to Z Mysteries are available at both the Rathburn Library at 36 Main Street East Haddam and at the Brainerd Memorial Library, 920 Saybrook Road, Haddam.
