Spring is here, finally, and we’re all looking to yard and lawn preparation.

It’s important to keep in mind the harmful effects of fertilization and pesticides that enter our lakes, encouraging over-growth of native and invasive aquatic plants as well as harmful algae.

Try to keep fertilizer use to a minimum, especially near any body of water where run-off can affect the lake. Plan to mow your lawn with the mower in mulch cycle, distributing as you mow. Keep in mind that you must keep your mower blade sharp (3 sharpening minimum per season recommended; cut to about 3“ for healthiest grass).

An alternative is to bag your clippings and establish a mulching area to create a very rich mulch for bare spots and later applications.

Interested lake area residents are invited to an Aquatic Weed Workshop on June 21, 9:00 a.m. at the Lake Hayward Pavilion.

Membership in MRPG is open to anyone interested in the health of Moodus Reservoir and other lakes in town. Dues for the coming year July, 2014 to June 2015 are $25 per household.

Checks made payable to “MRPG” may be sent to Tim Varriale, Treasurer, MRPG, Inc., 76 Falls Bashan Rd, Moodus, CT 06469. Please include address, phone and e-mail. Donations are always welcome. Information inquiries may be sent to:
