Moodus Reservoir Preservation Group: Winter Meeting

...From the desk of Sam Guy, Jr.

The Moodus Reservoir Preservation Group, Inc. or (MRPG) held its formative meeting recently, approving by-laws and electing officers.

Located in Moodus, a Village of East Haddam, Moodus Reservoir was constructed in the early 1800’s to stabilize the flow from the Moodus River which powered the many mills existing in East Haddam at the time.

The lake is now owned by the State and is used for recreation by people in town, from around the state and other parts of New England for boating, kayaking, swimming, fishing, skating, water skiing and tubing. It is home to the town beach and two public boat launches.

In recent years, the lake has been experiencing growing intrusion of several invasive aquatic plant species, most seriously Fanwort and Milfoil, which are increasingly encroaching on the health of the water and its usefulness for recreation.

MRPG was formed to protect and improve the 486 acre lake. The group is incorporated and applying for IRS 501(c)3 tax free status.

Its formation has received support and encouragement from the East Haddam First Selectman Mark Walter, State Senator-33rd Art Linares and State Representative-34th Melissa Ziobron.

The newly elected governing board consists of the following:

President: Jeff King
Vice President: Bob Falletti
Secretary: Barbi Batchelder
Treasurer: Tim Varriale
Board of Directors: Gary Christopher, Martha Cohen, Sam Guy, Jr., Al Howat and Dan O’Mara, Sr.

The Weed Control and Water Monitoring Committee is interviewing treatment vendors to develop a plan of treatment based on the 2012 Study of Moodus Reservoir by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station.

Volunteers conduct water monitoring in the summer. Our Public Relations and Education Committee has distributed information on septic system regulations and boat cleaning recommendations via e-mail and brochures at meetings.

Membership is open to anyone interested in the health and preservation of the reservoir. Current dues are $10 per household, covering the year ending June 30, 2014.

Checks made payable to “MRPG” may be sent to Tim Varriale, Treasurer, MRPG, Inc., 76 Falls Bashan Rd, Moodus, CT. 06469.

Please include your home address, phone number and e-mail address. Any extra donations are always welcome and most appreciated!
