Bad Day on the Boat Launch...

A word of warning, although it's nothing new. The lower Moodus Reservoir Boat Launch is not safe to drive or park on!

It's happened many, many times over the years when the launch becomes covered in snow. Someone will see tire tracks through the snow, and assume it must be okay to go down there. Well, not always. The ice below the snow-cover is very unforgiving, and quite a few people have gotten into trouble out there over the years.

A 4-wheel-drive vehicle is not always guaranteed, and no match for the continual winds that blow across the launch area, creating quite an ice situation (especially beneath the snow) most of the time.

The DEEP does not maintain the launch area in the winter months. Today, a local couple and their three children were stuck for a little over two hours, as well as a couple of ice-fishermen stranded in a separate vehicle, as they had to wait for the rescue efforts in progress.
