La Vita Gustosa Wins Chowder Cookoff

The over 350 attendees enjoyed samples of the eight delicious chowders all from East Haddam restaurants or organizations.

East Haddam, CT – The East Haddam Economic Development Commission (EDC) would like announce the winners of the 10th Annual East Haddam Chowder Cook-off held on March 23, 2013.

The over 350 attendees enjoyed samples of the eight delicious chowders all from East Haddam restaurants or organizations.  The first place “People’s Choice- Best Chowder” silver ladle trophy was awarded to La Vita Gustosa, whose blue crab and corn chowder was made by new head chef, Jim Wilder.  Second place was the offering of 32 Main, a new café coming soon next door to the East Haddam Post Office, and third place, was co-host, Gelston House.  Defending champion, On the Rocks at Fox Hopyard, placed fourth.

Hillside Sweet Shoppe offered “make your own candy chowder,” bringing along over 30 lbs. of sweet ingredients and winning the EDC “Table Décor” prize, best displaying the spirit of the annual community event.  Cook-off newcomers from Franklin AcademyEast Haddam Business Association and St. Stephen’s Church head back to the kitchen to tweak their recipes for next year.

Special thanks go out to all of the chefs, businesses and organizations for donating their time and chowder.  Also thank you to all the community attendees for their donations to support local causes.  The EDC will decide which charities and non-profit organizations will receive the proceeds at their April 4th meeting.
