Youth Services, Library Sponsor Summer Read

The East Haddam Free Public Library will hold book discussions throughout the summer.

East Haddam Youth & Family Services and The East Haddam Free Public Library are hosting a first-ever East Haddam Community Read, in which the entire community is encouraged to read the same book. The idea is to spark communication and conversation, as well as a sense of unity. The first book in the East Haddam Reads program is “The Hunger Games,” by Suzanne Collins.

“Hunger Games” synopsis: In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the other districts in line by forcing them to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight-to-the-death on live TV.  One boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and sixteen are selected by lottery to play. The winner brings riches and favor to his or her district. But that is nothing compared to what the Capitol wins: one more year of fearful compliance with its rule. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her impoverished district in the Games.  But Katniss has been close to dead before — and survival, for her, is second nature.

Participating in the community read is easy, simply and free.

Discuss: Join your friends and neighbors at any or all of the East Haddam Reads discussion groups.

Book discussion groups are a place where people who have read the same book can discuss what they’ve read and compare thoughts with their fellow readers. The discussion is usually fun, upbeat, & exciting, and is led by a moderator who makes sure everybody gets a chance to share.

What makes our East Haddam Reads discussions so much fun is the wide variety of people who attend. People from all over town are reading the same book, people with vastly different points of view.  This meeting of the minds enhances and enriches the book and the discussion.  Space is limited, please register early. Discussions will be held at The East Haddam Free Public Library, 18 Plains Rd (Rt. 151), Moodus. Discussion topics and dates: Tuesday, July 19, Chapters 1-5; Tuesday, July 26, Chapters 5-10; Tuesday, August 9, Chapters 11-15; Tuesday, August 16, Chapters 16-20; Tuesday, August 23, Chapters 21-27.
