Walking In A Winter Wonderland: 10 Things to See Outdoors

Haddam Meadows State Park Affords Breathtaking Vistas For Those on Foot.

Every time I stop by Haddam Meadows State Park there is something new to see. Whether getting in a vigorous half-hour walk along the paved area or reading a book under the big tree that rises majestically in the center of the grassy area, no two visits are the same.

In warmer weather, boaters and jet-skiers take to the water, fishermen cast their lines for perch, catfish and small-mouth bass, and there's always a number of dogs happily catching balls or trotting along the trails.

Now that winter has hit (Tuesday was the winter solstice), and the trees are bare, birders can spy great blue herons, eagles in February, and common tree swallows.

Last week, I snapped some photographs as I meandered along the trails. They give you a glimpse of the diversity of this 154-acre state park open year round to the public.

The kids can grab a handful of rocks and see how far they can lob them into the river, or aim for frozen areas to splash through the ice.

Lace up your skates or grab a hockey stick and puck and hit the frozen pond at the entrance.

Grab your binoculars to search for seagulls, perhaps mergansers or a red-tailed hawk.

Bundle up for a run along the trails. All you need are sneakers and layered clothing.

A game of football is a great way to work off calories after a big meal and with family gatherings, you've got the makings of a small team — if you can persuade people to get outside.

Get some exercise by walking around the meadows while taking photographs. You'll be surprised at the activity going on — on a large and small scale.

Walk the dog or better yet bring his favorite stick or ball and play a game of catch and retrieve.

When there's snow on the ground, dig out your snowshoes or skis for a little cross country skiing. Calories burned in an hour: 570.

When the wind chill is negligible, the Meadows is perfect for cycling.
