From August 23 through Sept 17, 2013, the Higganum Congregational Church at 23 Parsonage Road in Higganum will host the "Field of Flags."
Throughout this coming weekend, volunteers will put out thousands of flags in remembrance of the American casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan.
According to the Somers Congregation Church's website, members of the Memorial Garden Committee of the church placed 2,231 American flags on the church grounds back in 2005. Each flag represented one American casualty in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The flags were placed to honor those fallen and "to show that those who have died and their families and friends were remembered in prayer at our church.”
The field has now grown to almost 7,000
According to the Higganum Congregational Church's website, a Worship service on Sunday August 25 "will be a service of rememberence for the American casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan." The service will feature the Color Guard of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and Taps will be played by a member of the USCG.
