[4:45 p.m. Update] No School Monday; Shelter Open At EH Senior Center

As Haddam and East Haddam dig out from a surreal Saturday, 2,348 CL&P customers in Haddam — 60% — are without power, and 1,244 — 25% — are in the dark in East Haddam. If you're among those with power, share your photos with us below!

4:45 p.m. Update:

Because of the power outages in East Haddam, most notably the elementary school, school has been canceled in East Haddam for Monday. All after-school and evening sports and club activities are also canceled.

The East Haddam Senior Center at 15 Great Hillwood Road is open till 8 p.m. tonight for use as a shelter. Residents are encouraged to bring their electronic devices to charge. Food will not be served, but water will be available. Non-potable water from a hose will also be available. Residents should bring non-perishable food and toys for children.

1:22 p.m. update:

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has asked President Obama for an emergency declaration to help with cleanup for the state. If granted, the state would be eligible for direct federal assistance as well as reimbursement for 75% of certain emergency protective measures.

The governor also lifted the travel ban for the Wilbur Cross/Merritt Parkways, but advised residents to stay off the roads if possible to let DOT crews clear impacted areas.

12:30 p.m. Original Story:

Well, how's that for a fall surprise?

As of noon, residents were beginning to come out of their homes and assess what surely is the strangest — and is definitely the largest — early snowfall in the area's history.

According to CL&P, 60% (2,348 customers) of Haddam and 25% (1,244) of East Haddam are without power. And Gov. Malloy said that situation could last for a "prolonged" period.

Patch will be walking around and taking pictures, so check back here for updates throughout the day. If you have power, that is.
