Legislators Hosting Community Cleanup of Former Sunrise Resort Sunday, Oct. 27

State Rep. Melissa Ziobron (R-34) and State Sen. Art Linares (R-33) are inviting area residents to join them for a community cleanup of Sunrise State Park on Sunday, October 27 from 1 to 5 p.m.

“This is a unique hands-on opportunity for our community to take part in the long-awaited effort to clean up this landmark,” State Rep. Ziobron said. “Many of us have fond memories of the property when it was a successful resort. Coordinating community support will be critical to establish a Friends group, which will advocate for the Park long into the future.”

“Please tell friends and neighbors about this cleanup,” Sen. Linares said.  “In one afternoon, we can make a tremendous impact on the look of the park.  It should be a great day.”

Area residents are asked to come dressed to help pick up litter and debris from the park.  Delicious chili, soup and sandwiches will be provided to volunteers courtesy of Moodus Sportsmen’s Club following the cleanup.

The legislators’ Sep. 25 meeting to discuss the future of the property attracted more than 80 residents. State environmental officials pledged to ensure the mowing of the front fields, protection of the site’s three historical buildings and the re-opening of the park by November 1, 2013.

Rep. Ziobron and Sen. Linares have pushed for a plan for Sunrise State Park since taking office in January because of concern that the property has devolved into an abandoned collection of rundown buildings that presents a significant safety hazard to the public and welcomes illicit behavior such as drug use, vandals and arson. The property, once a recreational destination for vacationers, was purchased by the state in 2008.

The park is located on Route 151 (Leesville Road) in the Moodus section of East Haddam, one mile south of the intersection with Route 196.
