Haddam Resident Named CBA President

Attorney Mark A. Dubois was installed as president of the Connecticut Bar Association (CBA) at the CBA Annual Luncheon during the Connecticut Legal Conference on June 16 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.

Attorney Dubois is counsel with the New London firm of Geraghty & Bonnano where he represents individuals accused of ethical misconduct and malpractice. As Connecticut’s first Chief Disciplinary Counsel, serving from 2003 until 2011, he established an office that investigated and prosecuted attorney misconduct and the unauthorized practice of law.

Attorney Dubois also teaches ethics at the University of Connecticut School of Law and has taught ethics as Quinnipiac University School of Law where he was Distinguished Practitioner in Residence in 2011. He has lectured in Connecticut and nationally on attorney ethics and has given or participated in over 75 presentations and symposia on attorney ethics and malpractice. He has also taught trial advocacy and legal research and writing.

A very active member of the CBA, Attorney Dubois’ activities in the association include president-elect (2013-2014), chair of the Legislative Policy and Review Committee (2013-2014), vice president (2012-2013), past chair of the Pro Bono Committee, and the Task Force on Communications as well as membership in the Connecticut Council of Bar Presidents, LGBT Section, Modest Means Initiative, Professional Discipline Committee, Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, and the Court Visitation Committee. Attorney Dubois is a member of many local, state, and national professional organizations. Additionally, he has been board certified in civil trial advocacy by the National Board of Legal Specialty Certification for over 20 years.

The Connecticut Bar Association is governed by a Board of Governors and House of Delegates. The House of Delegates is the primary decision-making and policy-making body of the CBA. The Board of Governors is the administrative board of the CBA, which includes responsibility for budgetary and financial matters other than setting annual dues. There are also seven offices, held by members of the Association for a one-year term, which include president, immediate past president, president-elect, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and assistant secretary-treasurer.

As CBA president, Dubois is the spokesperson for the Association. He presides over the meetings of the House of Delegates and the Board of Governors, and appoints chairs of each of the CBA’s 40 Sections. In addition, Attorney Dubois appoints an Executive Committee from each of the Sections’ membership to hold office for the term of the 2014-2015 bar year. He is also responsible for establishing new Committees, of which there are 22 currently active.
