As I have learned in the past "trust but verify" please call a BOE member and ask them if…Read More they have seen the new report card, when they saw the new report card, if the board voted on the report card. I know from reading the minutes there is very limited talk about any report cards. There has been talk about the new core curriculum. I also know minutes can be deceiving from boards and commissions but I would have thought that something this big and much of a change would have something like board agrees that new report cards look good or bad or something to any effect. The only thing that I saw was on 1/8/13 when mention was made about the parent meeting and one board member asking if SBRC was used in the HS. I should note clearly - I am not out to crucify our BOE. I know they are governed by state statue and then add on their additional policies. I am very disappointed in the fact they were not involved ( from my understanding) in the implementation, development or tracking of the new report card. The waters on this whole thing get muddier and muddier. Again, don't take my word on this, read the minutes or call a board member. I do not go to all the board meetings, I can only say what I have been told and what I read in the minutes. Again, I am not out to hang the board members, I just want parents to understand if they have been led to believe this SBRC was a mandate from the state and our BOE embraced this - they may want to find out all the details.

Resident-
Let me get this straight you believe that - BOE did not approve this..... no one saw the…Read More report card before it went out ? and I am not sure who has since ? Sad! Well it clearly demonstrates the lack of competence and how well the BOE is informed the in the area of our children's education.

Dear save our schools : I have not heard that rumor.... I think where that may have started was…Read More with some people looking at the old middle school and thinking about using it for a vo-ag school, but not at all connected with our school system. I have not heard anything for a while on that whole subject. I have not heard about accreditation issues either... I know about 12 years ago or maybe longer there were issues. My kids are not in the HS. Normally I support our BOE. And it should be noted that the BOE did not approve this... I would tend to bet that if you polled every board member - no one saw this report card system before it went out, and I am not sure who has seen it since. With kids in the middle school now I am keeping an ear open about the HS.

Geoff, your statement, "Most semi-auto, assault-type weapons can be modified (either with kits…Read More or by hand) to be fully auto." is inaccurate and misleading, while many fully automatic weapons can be coverted to semi-automatic. The reverse is simply not true, it is intentionally, difficult (and 100% ilegal), to convert a semi-auto firearm to fully automatic. Without significant machining to the reciever, the ilegal kits you mention will not fit. This is why as I stated, I was very disturbed by the statements made by the President.

Geoff, I was just using the knife as a way of pointing out that if somebody wants to kill somebody…Read More else they will use what is available. It may just be the knife you cut your bread with. There have been other anaolgies where they used text messaging and while distracted killed somebody while driving their car. Nothing is done for that outside of the existing laws for testing while driving.
I, myself, do not see a need for the average person to have an auto weapon just because the constitution says we have a right to have arms. I have also applied for a gun permit so not all gun owners feel the need to have an automatic weapon. I can also see the people that have one using the guns for competition but it is not where I will be. I found that I am good at target shooting and will go into competition but with a .22 or .380. I just feel that the law was passed through too quickly and now there are lawyers wanting to fight the law so we are no further ahead. If the law went through the way it should have we wouldn't be having these issues. The various groups might not be fully happy with it but would be more willing to accept it if it went through the normal process. Any law passed through fear is a law that will step on our rights if we have no say in it. Even one of the long guns on the banned list is one that the Boy Scouts use and is referred to as the Boy Scout gun.

Well, we'll just have to wait until the report comes out. While it will be like re-opening a wound…Read More and start the grieving all over again, it will be important to do.
In the mean time, the original argument above is irrelevant - re: semi vs full auto. Most semi-auto, assault-type weapons can be modified (either with kits or by hand) to be fully auto.
Also, bad analogy with the knife thing. Actually, there are many laws on the books regarding "knife control" related to types of knives, size of knives, whether they are concealed or not, etc.
Furthermore, I cut a loaf of bread with a knife, not with an AR-15 or an Uzi.

Nor any other type of loan. But the truth is that the lenders are the ones with the financial…Read More savvy, and consumers are conditioned to believe that if they qualify for credit the bank has determined that they will be able to pay it back. The problem with student loans is that they are given to people who could never otherwise qualify because the government guarantees them. Are those consumers naive or badly informed? Probably, but the statute books of the federal government and all fifty states are planted thick with laws to protect borrowers who lack sophistication.
The student loan bubble is no different than the housing bubble. Give people loans for which they are not really qualified so they can buy something they want and you flood the market with cash. In response, the prices of things people want to pay for with their loans (diplomas and houses) skyrocket, the sellers knowing that Uncle Sam will keep pumping more cash into the system. The housing bubble burst and when there are enough people unable to carry the non-dischargable debt they took on to pay $40,000/year tuition the student loan bubble will also burst.
Since we taxpayers will be picking up the pieces I am not willing to just say "nobody forced you" and leave it at that.

Maybe they should not have deferred and chose to overpay the outstanding debt on the student loans.…Read More Looks like they make a pretty good buck between them, maybe 150k a year. Tell them to look in a lower price range, maybe they need to work up to the dream home. I did, and so did a lot of the rest of us who paid off their student loans and didn't put it off.

Really? So they can start banning sports because of injuries.

One big issue is even though my child plays school sports she plays travel sports so an injury from…Read More travel might not be recorded as travel and go under school making the study wrong. Many children play outside of school how would they make sure they have proper data. Maybe they should document something that they can be sure that the info they use is correct.

@Sean, irrelevant, only because parents think their child is the next great athlete and are willing…Read More to pay the thousands of dollars to get them a spot on a team. Typically many of those child athletes would have a difficult time making the HS team without Daddy's money.
